Adding a pattern to a post or page

  1. While editing a page or post, click the blue + icon in the upper left hand corner to add a new block.
  2. Click on the “Patterns” tab.
  3. Use the dropdown to choose which category of patterns you want to use or click “Explore” to open a modal that allows you to have a larger view of each pattern.
  4. Click on the pattern you wish to insert. It will be inserted at the location of your cursor in the editor.
  5. Edit the inserted pattern on your page or post as needed.

Important

Patterns under the Header, Footer, and Sidebar categories are only meant to be used in your site’s global template. For that reason, DO NOT insert these patterns into a page or post directly. Please only use these in your site’s Header, Footer, and Sidebar template parts, which can be accessed from the Site Editor. See our post for instructions for editing your Header, Footer, and Sidebar.

Patterns available in the CAES Faculty 2023 theme

General patterns

  • Information Box: Highlight information in your article. Works well in posts.
  • Important Box: Highlight information in your article. Works well in posts.
  • Call to action sections: useful for grabbing your user’s attention and directing them to another page using the button. Replace the placeholder image with an eye-catching photo. Works well on pages.
  • Grid list of pages on your site: A Query Loop block that will display a list of pages on your site. We recommend using the Query Loop’s filters to list pages by Parent to list child pages of a selected parent page. Works well on pages.
  • Grid highlighting two of your website’s important pages: Edit the titles, text, and button links to highlight two of your site’s important pages. Works well on pages.
  • Featured quote with headshot: Highlight your program or service by replacing the default headshot and text with a student or client’s testimonial. Works well on pages.
  • Quotes with headshots: Highlight your program or service by replacing the default headshots and text with three student or client testimonials. Works well on pages.

Post List patterns

Post list patterns allow you to pull in a stylized feed of your latest posts. This uses the Query Loop block with options to pull in the latest posts, and to filter by categories or tags. These work well on pages like your homepage.

Patterns included for Post Lists in the CAES Faculty 2023 theme include:

  • Grid style post feed: A grid style list of posts. This style works best if you are consistently setting the “featured image” on your posts.
  • Feature a post: Use these patterns to feature the latest post, or to feature the latest “sticky” post using the Query Block settings.
  • List of posts: Displays the latest list of posts in the same style of a default home page or category page.

The following video will show you how to insert a Post List pattern and adjust its filters for your needs.

These are patterns that are only meant to be used in your site’s global template for the Header, Footer, and Sidebar. For that reason, DO NOT insert these patterns into a page or post directly. Please only use these in your site’s Header, Footer, and Sidebar template parts, which can be accessed from the Site Editor.
