Members of your OIT team recently had the opportunity to attend the National Extension Technology Community’s (NETC) annual conference in Gainesville, FL. This provided an opportunity to receive additional training, network with other Extension professionals, and collaborate on the problems facing the Extension community nation wide.
One of the most popular events is the gadgets and gizmos presentation, where Extension professionals share tools that make their lives easier. We’ve collected a handful of our colleagues’ recommendations here we think would be helpful in the field.
Agricultural Education
FarmBeats for Students from Microsoft, provides an introduction to precision agriculture. The kits introduce students to digital censor technology for sampling and monitoring. This is paired with curriculum introducing methods of using data analysis and AI in production settings. The kits introduce the next generation to the technology they can use to help optimize farm production.
Handy Tools
Milwaukee FASTBACK 6-in-1 from Milwaukee tool. This tool was referenced by our own service team at UGA. The convenient tool includes a folding 1/4″ bit holder, along with knife, wire stripper and bottle opener. It’s incredibly convenient for field work where you need access to both a knife and screwdriver.
14-in-1 Adjustable Impact Screwdriver from Klein Tools. This screwdriver was designed for those who often need to switch quickly from an impact driver to handheld screwdrivers. It was initially designed as an HVAC tool, so it includes 12 of the most common bit and nut drivers.
The AKNEAR LED Rechargeable Headlight is a favorite for its multiple light settings and long lasting rechargeable battery. As a bonus, the battery pack doubles as a portable brick charger for cell phones or other devices you may use in the field.
Technical Gadgets
Shokz OpenRun Pro bluetooth headphones fit over your ears but do not go into your ear directly. This makes them great for people who find traditional earbuds uncomfortable or who need to be able to still hear their surroundings while in use. The built in microphone allows you to use them for taking calls as well as listening to music or podcasts from your devices.
The INGNOK 15.6″ Portable monitor is great for those who travel to make presentations or who need an easy additional display for booths, tables and promotional opportunities. This model comes with a portable stand for easy display. Its portability makes it easier to carry around than a traditional monitor. An upgraded model is available with touch screen if you find you frequently need to display signup or registration forms.
If you travel with multiple internet connected devices frequently, this ASUS Travel Router provides extra security and convenience. If you arrive at a convention center, or hotel with your family, instead of entering new WiFi info on multiple devices, simply connect this travel router to the local WiFi and all your devices can connect to a known network. This also provides additional security as the router acts as a buffer between your devices and the unknown open network.
