A new federal rule requires state and local governments, including public universities, to ensure all digital content—websites, mobile apps, and social media—is accessible to people with disabilities.

Issued by the U.S. Department of Justice, this update to Title II of the ADA was published on April 24, 2024, and took effect on June 24. As a public university, we have until April 24, 2026, to comply.

Federal Rule Documentation

ADA.gov provides a summary designed to provide introductory information about the rule’s requirements, particularly for people who may not have a legal background. For more information, please read the full rule. The official version of the rule is published in the Federal Register.

What This Means for CAES and UGA Extension

Our website templates already meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards, but compliance also depends on how content is created and maintained. Web content managers must follow accessibility best practices when adding text, images, videos, and documents to ensure ongoing compliance.

This rule also applies beyond websites. Anyone managing digital content—including e-newsletters, social media, and online documents—must ensure their materials are accessible.

To help you meet these requirements, OIT offers self-paced courses, best practices, and guidance on ADA digital accessibility. Visit our Digital Accessibility Handbook to learn how to make your content compliant:
